Phillip Island Chess Club is bringing together locals of all ages and skill levels, offering a welcoming space to socialise, learn and compete. Established in 2023, the club has become a popular community activity for both experienced players and beginners looking to improve their game.

The club was founded by Janosh, who said chess became especially important following a major stroke. “I had a major stroke, and it’s something I can continue to do. It’s something constructive to do,” he said.

Experienced players within the club are strong competitors and regularly help newer members improve their skills. Held at the library on Thursdays at 1:30 pm, the club offers locals an opportunity to socialise and challenge themselves intellectually.

Chess is a game that encourages strategic thinking and concentration. Whilst at times highly competitive, chess also creates opportunities for conversation and learning. Although chess is challenging to learn, the club has a variety of skill levels, from beginners to experts. The Phillip Island Library, located within the Berninneit building at 91–97 Thompson Avenue and established in 2023, provides a modern and welcoming setting for the Chess Club. Accompanied by comfortable facilities and nearby accessible parking, the library makes attending the club convenient, with accessible parking spaces, access ramps, and automatic doors.

Players of all skill levels are encouraged to attend, particularly beginners looking to improve their understanding of the game. The environment is casual but competitive, with an overwhelmingly welcoming atmosphere. The club attracts a diverse range of people from across the local community.

One of the most enjoyable aspects of the club is the balance between competition and community connection. Regular member Steven said the club offers more than just an opportunity to play chess.

“Other than enjoying chess, it’s a social outlet,” he said.

Despite some matches being highly competitive, players support one another and discuss games afterwards. Thursday sessions often shift between quiet concentration during matches and relaxed conversations between players.

Many members enjoy both the social aspects of the club and the opportunity to improve their skills over time. Whether experienced or completely new to chess, the club offers an enjoyable environment focused on both competition and community. Janosh believes chess has a unique ability to bring people together. “Chess is like love and music, it has the power to make you happy,” he said. Whether looking to improve their game or meet new people, locals are welcome to attend the Phillip Island Chess Club. There are no membership requirements; it’s a free activity held at the library every Thursday between 1:30 and 2:30 pm, and all chess equipment is provided. As the club continues to grow, it remains an enjoyable community activity for both Phillip Island locals and alike.
